Abortion: When Does Life Begin?
When does life begin? This is one of the most controversial questions today, and it leads to one of the hottest
topics, abortion. There are two sides to this argument, the Pro-choice who believe life begins when the fetus is
viable, or when it can survive outside of the womb; and Pro-Life, who say that the babies life begins at
conception. Pro-Life advocates have hit the nail on the head. Life begins at conception; therefore, abortion is
murder. Abortion is the genocide of innocent and defenseless babies.
Pro-choice is the stance that women have the rights to their own body and the right to choose what happens to
it. They believe abortions are ok, and that it is not a baby inside of them, but a fetus, an embryo, or an ‘it’. Their
definition of an abortion; according to Prochoice.com is "The human intervention that does not allow a
developing fetus to be born." A Pro-Life stance is that abortion is the expulsion of a human baby (National Right
To…); no woman has the right to take the life of a child. The baby inside the woman is not an embryo, fetus, or
an ‘it’, it is a baby, and has rights. He or she deserves to be protected like everyone else. In both definitions it is
easily seen that both stances refer to the termination of a pregnancy, but as you dig deeper into the definitions it
becomes apparent how semantics start to come into play. A Pro-abortionist refers to a baby as an ‘it’, an
embryo, or a fetus, because that way it’s a lot easier to kill them. They can “justify” what they’re doing, by
calling it something other than a baby; they are dehumanizing it and taking away his or her rights so they feel no
remorse or guilt.
“We’re not killing something human; it’s merely an embryo, because medically it’s no different than the mother’s
appendix (Leadership U).” That’s their justification. What they fail to comprehend is that by the time the
mother misses her first period, signaling that she is pregnant; the baby’s heart has began to beat. Something that
is qualified as an ‘it’, embryo, or fetus, or basically something nonhuman, should not have a heart beat, or any of
the other human characteristics that the baby has. The baby is very much different from the mother, and it can be
proven medically and scientifically. Pro-life advocates call ‘it’ a baby, because they have grasped that because he
or she has a heartbeat, brain waves, arms, legs, and ALL of the other characteristics that qualify it as being a
human being, it is obviously a human being. By calling
‘it’ a baby, they know that it will affect people when they say that abortion is the termination of a baby’s life or
the murdering of a baby, instead of saying it’s the termination of an embryo. It’s all in the choice of words; the
sentences are the same but by swapping baby for embryo it changed the demeanor of it. The Pro-choice sentence
makes it seem ok, and almost happy. Whereas, the Pro-Life sentence makes a person sad and angry, and shows
that if they have a conscience than there is no possible way that they could ever do that to a baby. Pro-choice
can try as they might, with whatever words they can come up with to dehumanize a baby, but in the end it is
still a baby, and they are still spilling out innocent blood.
Worldwide there are about 42 million abortions done each year and around 115,000 done a day The U.S.
performs 1.5 million abortions a year and around 3,700 a day. (The Center for…). That’s an enormous amount
of babies being killed. In 2006, 12%, 7.3 million women ages 15-44 in the United States were infertile (Womens
Health), which means that they couldn’t have children. Yet, look at the amount of babies, that women just killed
off willy nilly. Do they realize that those women would have given their left arm to have been pregnant while
they couldn’t care less?  And just what were their reasons why for killing so many innocent babies? Well, let’s
take a look.
According to The Center For Bio-Ethical Reform 1% or 16, 000 women had an abortion because of rape or
incest. Six percent were because of health risks to the mother or baby.  Now, these are really hard cases to
dispute about, but a baby is still a baby and murder is still murder. A fair amount of Pro-lifers will say that they’
re a little more on the neutral side of an abortion for a rape or incest, or because of a health risk to the mother or
child; mainly because the mother has gone through so much with these cases, and for the obvious reasons of harm
to the mother or child, but part of it is because they don’t want to be seen as an extremist. But, a vast majority
of mothers who believe that it is a baby inside them will go ahead and have the child. This is the point where
their love for the baby and their faith comes into play. They know that God will take care of them. They have
faith that if their baby was conceived through rape or incest that he or she will not grow up to be like their father.
Originally I was for women having an abortion in these cases, and yes, part of it was because I didn’t want to be
seen as an extremist, but after hearing some women’s stories and researching more and more about the brutality
of  abortion, I realized that these babies did nothing wrong and it’s not fair to punish them. I would much rather
be seen as an extremist then a murderer. The main reason women are having abortions is for social reasons.
Ninety-three percent of women are having them because the baby is unwanted or inconvenient to their lifestyle
(The Center For…). They’re using it as a form of birth-control; just how is murdering helpless children, so they
can continue to go around and be stupid and careless really justified? For women who are supposed to be grown-
up and responsible, they are acting very irresponsible; by aborting they are not taking responsibility for their
actions, they’re merely sweeping their problems under the rug. Who are these women to play God; just because
having a baby would mean growing up and they’d have to deal with some inconvenience.
People like to point fingers and say that it’s only the teenagers that are having abortions. They’re quite wrong
there. Women of all ages are having them.  The most common age for women to have abortions is between 19-25
years old.  The most shocking is that 1.2% of girls having abortions are under the age of 15 (The Center for…).
That means that the fifteen year old girls having abortions are today’s freshmen and Junior High girls; that is
outrageous. The worst part is that a number of those girls, who are having abortions, are going to have health
problems later on because of it, and a good percentage of them will become infertile because their bodies cannot
handle it; some will even die. The reality is that anytime a woman has an abortion she is risking having health
problems, becoming infertile, or dying; the only difference is that older women are supposed to be setting an
example, and the example they are setting now is that ‘Hey, it’s totally cool to go out and get pregnant multiple
times and kill off the baby as many times as you want, as long as it is convenient for you; after all it is your
body, and why not start as young as you possibly can.’ Girls within my local hometown are starting to have sex
as young as 10 years old, most of them haven’t even gotten their period, let alone can they even really tell
someone what sex is. These so called example setters don’t even realize that they’re ruining the upcoming
generations. These kids aren’t taught the facts, they know nothing, and part of the reason there are so many
abortions is because they aren’t taught about birth control and abstinence is not pushed like it should be. They’re
taught do what makes them feel good, and that it’s not a baby inside of you it is an ‘it’. So they think it can’t
possibly be murdering, well the newsflash is, “Before seeing light and uttering their first cry, THEY ARE
ALREADY SOMEONE (Rostand, 14)!”  It’s time these so called ‘responsible example setters’ grow up, and
stop ruining our generation and the upcoming ones and start setting some good examples.
Most people believe that women have abortions because they don’t make enough money to raise a baby, but
that is not the case. According to The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, only 29% of women who make less than
$15,000 a year had an abortion. While the highest percentage of abortions, 38%, are done by women who made
between $30,000-$59,000 a year. Does anyone see something wrong with that picture? A person, who is
considered poor because they barely even make the quota to be put on the annual salary scale, is being accused of
aborting babies when in actuality they are more likely to keep them then someone who has the means to provide
for one. These women who make more than enough money and are murdering babies have absolutely no excuse,
except for pure selfishness. They are so wrapped up in themselves and the ‘me, me, me’ world that they just
don’t care. A person’s financial situation is never a good enough excuse to abort. If you don’t have the means,
there is always adoption, there are tons of couples out there who can’t have children and would love to adopt a
baby. To all these women who are using their financial status, whether rich or poor, as a justification for
aborting, a pack of condoms cost $6, why not try investing in them; after all it’s a whole lot cheaper than the
$372- $487(Guttmacher Institute) it cost to have an abortion.
There are seven different types of abortions performed today, and despite what people may think none of them
are simple harmless procedures. They all have major risks for the mother and they are all killing innocent babies.
They can be broken down into three different type’s surgical, partial birth, pills or drugs. The first and most
frequently used method is Suction Aspiration; it’s done within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The mother is
given an anesthetic, her womb is then stretched open, a plastic tube is stuck inside, and then a machine with 30
times more suction power than a household vacuum then sucks pieces of the baby out and into a jar. They then
go in and scrape off the placenta and suck that out too. The second type of method is the Dilation and Curettage
(D&C), which is also done within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. This procedure is similar to the suction
except instead of sucking the baby out, they take a loop-shaped knife, a curette, and they go in and hack the
baby to pieces and then scrape it out into the jar. It’s a real life butchering, and people thought horror films were
all made up, well to these babies, thousand go through it every day. RU486 and Methotrexate are abortion drugs,
given within 5-7 weeks of pregnancy. RU486 prevents nutrients from getting to the baby through the placenta,
causing it to starve to death over the course of a few days.  Methotrexate, however, directly poisons the baby,
causing his or her death, the mother than goes into a hard labor and dispels a shriveled little dead baby (Teen
Breaks). The next type is Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) done within the first 18 weeks. This procedure is used
after the baby’s bones have hardened. A plier-like instrument with a knife like edge is inserted into the womb; a
piece of the body is seized, like an arm or leg, twisted off, and then removed. They continue to pull the baby
apart limb by limb until nothing is left but the head, at that point they then go in and crush it and pull that out
to. People wouldn’t like it very much if they were all snug in their beds and someone came in and started ripping
them apart limb by limb, yet they have absolutely no problem doing it to these innocent little babies who can’t
even defend themselves. One method that is rarely used because of danger to the mother is Salt Poisoning (Saline
Amniocentesis) done only after four months of pregnancy. A large needle full of a concentrated salt solution is
inserted through the mother’s abdomen and injected into the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. The baby will
then begin to breathe in and swallow the solution, at which point it will slowly begin to poison him or her and
burn away their outer skin, until he or she dies. The mothers will then go into labor and expel the burned baby
(Teen Breaks). Prostaglandin Abortion was done four to six months in the pregnancy. It was a drug given to the
mother to cause her to have a violent premature labor of a baby too young to survive. After the baby was born
he or she would be left on the table to die.  Technically, this is considered abandonment, and if the mother were
to do that to a baby that she had had through a wanted birth than she would have been thrown in jail; our society
is just a little on the twisted, messed up side. Hysterotomy is done four to nine months of pregnancy.  This type
of abortion is similar to that of a Cesarean section live birth, except that the intent of the Hysterotomy is to have
a dead baby. They would deliver the baby by a C-section and then either smother or drown the baby.  However,
these practices are now prohibited via court decision. The last method and most brutal method of abortion is the
Partial Birth or Brain Suction. It’s done four to nine months into the pregnancy. They dilate the cervical muscles
over a two-day period then they reach in and grasp the baby’s legs and pull him or her out of the birth canal,
with the exception of the head which remains inside. They then take a pair of scissors and jam it into the base of
the baby’s skull and spread the blades creating an opening to the brain. A tube is then inserted into the opening
and the brain is sucked out. From the time they pull the baby out to the time at which he or she is dead that baby
is clearly alive, he or she is moving, wiggly and showing visible signs of human life., how can Pro-abortionists
honestly say that, that baby felt no pain and that he or she is not a baby? That baby feels pain and is very much
aware of what is going on in the world around it. In Ron Bryce’s article My Little Patient, he tells a story about
a baby that has survived an abortion, and because he survived he is now a legal person and has rights and Ron
(who is not the abortion doctor) and the other doctors, are given the opportunity to try and save him.
Unfortunately, the baby was too weak and died a few hours later.  How twisted is that? That one second that
poor little baby has no rights at all and is having a doctor try and murder him, and the next he manages to survive
that and suddenly he gains rights. Why can so many babies like him be killed while the rest of us have our lives
and rights protected (Bryce, 20)? If someone could honestly read about those forms of abortions and the way
those babies are being murdered and still condone it, then they have been completely brain washed by society,
and their heart has been taken away. These little babies should begin with rights they shouldn’t have to fight for
them.
Ever-day thousands of Pro-life advocates are standing-up and giving their voices to the unborn. These little
innocent children, that do nothing wrong, yet, they are being punished for merely wanting to live.
An unborn child has the right to be physically and legally shielded from harm. This includes protection from
abortion, the brutal killing of fetuses by their mothers. Because the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees equal
protection for all, homicide laws must safeguard the unborn just like every other person. Never should a woman’
s right to privacy and personal autonomy supersede the unborn child’s right to live. Even if a woman has been
forcibly impregnated by a rapist, she does not have the right to kill her baby. Nor should a mother be permitted
to abort simply because her fetus is determined to have a severe deformity; that would be just as wrong as killing
the sick or the elderly. Fetuses at all states of development are humans, and all humans have a right to life. (Scott
Tibbs)
A baby is a baby; anyway a pro-abortionist wants to spin it. There is nothing that can be said to justify the
murdering of these children. Not only, are they violating their 14th Amendment rights but they’re going down in
history as performing the greatest human rights abuse of all time. Human life begins at conception. An
elementary definition of life is that it begins at fertilization, when the sperm unites with an oocyte. From that
moment, the being is highly organized, it has the ability to acquire materials and energy, respond to the
surrounding environment, he or she has the ability to adapt, and they have the ability to reproduce (Pro-Life
Physicians...). It’s really sad that elementary children can better understand where life begins than grown adults.
For these pro-choicers who say life doesn’t begin at conception and it begins when the baby is viable, then what
exactly would people look like if their life never began? The answer to that question is people would look like
nothing, there would be no humans, we would all be dead; because life has to begin somewhere and it all starts
with a sperm and egg, at the point of conception.
Since Roe v. Wade was legalized 36 years ago there have been over 50 million babies killed. That number greatly
dwarfs the amount of people killed in the Holocaust; yet people still seem to think that the murdering of these
babies is ok. It’s time that people see that this genocide cannot continue, and what they are doing is flat-out
murdering, there is no ands, ifs, or buts about it. Dr. Seuss stated, “A person is a person, no matter how small.”
These babies may be small and at the beginning infinitesimal, but they are human beings, not ‘its’, that deserve
the right to live.  Their life begins at conception, and aborting them is punishing them for the choices their
mothers made. Abortion is the murdering, and pouring of innocent blood out on this nation. These babies want a
chance to live, are pleading for one; give them the voices they need to be heard.
